‘Expect a miracle’…

…was the sign seen tastefully carved in wood on the front of a pulpit today. Of course it is absolutely right. We should come to the preaching encounter (on both sides of the pulpit) expecting a miracle. A bit like the miracle of Pentecost – it’s not really clear whether it is a miracle of speaking on the part of the preacher, or listening on the part of the congregation. Perhaps it doesn’t matter. The really important thing is that an authentic word from God is spoken, and heard.

Sadly on occasions the real miracle with preaching is that anyone bothers to listen to it! 

 I guess we just need to keep hoping , praying and expecting.
