Preacher one: listeners nil

… or maybe more.

My teenage audience at a youth group allowed me nearly three minutes of relative quiet tonight in amongst their heady cocktail of Friday night banter  and lively games. Three minutes is 30 seconds more than I usually get on national radio – but then again the audience there is silent!  Something amazing happened, though – not so much to the audience as to the preacher.  When they responded to my plea to listen, just for a bit, I was overwhelmingly grateful and told them so. “Thank you”, I said, and meant it.

As preachers we rarely express our gratitude to those who lend us their attention for a little while.  I wonder why not?
