Preaching on Malchus’ ear

For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Malchus is the unfortunate servant of the High Priest who gets caught up in the melee surrounding the arrest of Jesus.  One of the disciples lashes out with a sword and severs the servant’s ear.  Matthew and Luke record the incident, whilst John goes further and names the individual.

After many years of narrative preaching, I still find myself caught between the desire to use ‘holy imagination’ to the hilt as a God-given gift, but also wanting to stay on the right side of fanciful.  Malchus’ encounter with Jesus was as memorable as anyone else’s, no doubt.  What can we learn from it though?

Will let you know how it went tomorrow…
