A tale of the times

According to legend, Valentine was a young priest under Emperor Claudius II, who defied the Emperor’s edict banning marriage and went on marrying couples anyway.  When the law eventually caught up with him he was imprisoned awaiting execution. Whilst he waited, couples who had benefited from his secret weddings threw flowers and thank you notes through the bars of his prison cell.  Today this might all run differently…

Valentine gazed wistfully at the gates of the prison as the rain ran in rivulets down the window of the shabby cafe where he nursed his mug of coffee.  He was bruised from the encounter in his church lobby earlier that day.  He could still hear the young couple’s angry tones as they berated him for suggesting that they ought to marry. ‘What do you think we are. made of money?’, they had shouted. ‘And anyway – what’s wrong with the way we are? ‘.  He had thought about trying to explain -to talk about covenant and faithfulness and the guiding presence of God – but it was not the time. ‘You ought to be locked up’ was the young man’s parting thought, which left him now thinking about his namesake…
