…to crack a poet

Three months ago I started on a preaching journey through the puzzling book of Ecclesiastes with the help of Marvin the paranoid android.  Tomorrow night, as the series draws towards its close, I shall enlist the help of Robin Williams’ Mr Keating from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. Mr Keating’s introduction to his class will form our introduction to Ecclesiastes 11 v. 1 – 6.

I’m a great believer in form-centred preaching, where the form of a passage dictates the form of the sermon based upon it. Thus a Psalm is preached in a poetic style, a closely argued passage from Romans in an analytical style and so on. I’m a great believer, too, in tone-driven preaching, where the tone of the sermon is driven by the tone of the passage.

What tone are you preaching in this weekend?
